Elizabeth was born in 1751 in , Nansemond, VA. Elizabeth's father was Samuel Godwin and her mother was Catherine Scott. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Godwin and Martha Bridger. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Richard, Edmond, Samuel, Joseph, Martha, Christine and Ann. She was the third youngest of the nine children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Samuel, Thomas and Mary.-
