Alvin was born in 1841 in , , North Carolina. Alvin's father was Joshua Gladson and his mother was Rebecca. His paternal grandparents were Levin Gladson and Katherine. He had a brother and three sisters, named Harvey, Nancy, Mary and Cynthia. He was the third oldest of the five children.
