Andrew A. was born in January 1860 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Andrew A.'s father was Hinchea Gilliam and his mother was Nancy Shanks.  His paternal grandparents were John Gilliam and Mary. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Stephen, Joseph W., Marion L., Martha C. and Cordelia Ann.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James M. and Mary Jane.
