Thomas B. was born in 1840 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Thomas B.'s father was Joseph Bertram Galbraith and his mother was Eleanor J. Hutchinson. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Galbraith and Martha Shanks. He had six brothers and six sisters, named William, Harvey, James L., Audley, Andrew, Hugh, Margaret H., Martha E., Elizabeth Ellen, Mary, Margaret and Matilda. He was the fourth oldest of the thirteen children.-
