Sherwood was born on September 19th, 1759 in , Halifax, N.C.. Sherwood's father was Elias Fort and his mother was Ann Rawls. His paternal grandparents were Elias Fort and Olive Pitman; his maternal grandparents were William Rawls and Dinah Yeates. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Jesse, Micajah, Elias, Willis, Abscilla, Fort, Mary and Olive Pitman. He died at the age of 76 in 1835 in , Cumberland, N.C..-
