William Preston was born on July 8th, 1886 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. William Preston's father was Samuel Bruce Fickle and his mother was Ellen Akard Cross. His paternal grandparents were Robert Preston Fickle and Elizabeth Chamberlain; his maternal grandparents were William King Cross and Eliza Carlton. He had four brothers and eight sisters, named John Naff, Marvin Diggs, Lovick Pierce, Haskew Devault, Cora Glen, Fannie Blake, Anna May, Ada Lee, Mary Eliza, Ina Jean, Lonna Pet and Beulah Grace.-
