Josiah was born on August 20th, 1848 in , , NC. Josiah's father was James Ethelred Exum and his mother was Marinda Aldridge Sugg. His paternal grandparents were Jesse Exum and Amy Jordan; his maternal grandparents were Josiah Sugg and Elizabeth Aldridge. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John Albert, Benjamin Franklin, Elizabeth, Amy Jordan, Emily, Anneliza, Martha and Penina. He was the third youngest of the nine children.-
