Mary Ann was born in 1849 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary Ann's father was Azariah Darter and her mother was Sarah. Her paternal grandparents were Michael Darter and Catherine. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Henry, Hiram R., Margaret Catherine, Eliza, Letitia, Elizabeth, Louisiana and Lucinda.
