Sarah was born in 1869 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Sarah's father was Emanuel R. Cox and her mother was Elizabeth Christian.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Cox and Barbara Hammond; her maternal grandparents were Joseph U. Christian and Sarah. She had five brothers and four sisters, named George Washington, William A., Joseph W., Samuel Rufus, Cornelius, Mary, Elizabeth Frances, Jennie and Margie.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
