Robert was born in 1842 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Robert's father was James M. Cooper and his mother was Rachel. His paternal grandparents were John Cooper and Mary Young. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Nathaniel H., Winfield Or Wylie, Samuel Houston, Job, Benoni Caldwell, Elizabeth and Rosanna.
