Mary Jane was born in 1856 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary Jane's father was Robert Cooper and her mother was Mary Or Polly Ann. Her paternal grandparents were John Cooper and Mary Young. She had three brothers and a sister, named James T., John, Robert and Nancy R.. She was the youngest of the five children.
