Nancy Jane was born in 1837 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Nancy Jane's father was Winstead D. Cobb and her mother was Nancy. Her paternal grandparents were Joel Cobb and Sarah Winstead. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Andrew, William, John, Tivis, Jesse, Lee, Martha, Sarah, Elizabeth and Joanna. She was the oldest of the eleven children.-
