Margaret was born in 1843 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. Margaret's father was Joseph Helm Clay and her mother was Amanda Fitz Allen Scott. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Clay and Margaret Helm; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Scott and Elizabeth Cunningham. She had three brothers and a sister, named Henry, Samuel, Isaac C. and Ann. She was the youngest of the five children.-
