Henrietta was born in 1828 in , Scott, Kentucky. Henrietta's father was Henry Clay and her mother was Margaret Helm. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Clay and Rachel Povall. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Henry, John, Joseph Helm, Samuel H., Francis Povall, Matthew Martin, Lettitia, Sarah Or Sallie, Elizabeth Payne and Mary Ann. She was the youngest of the eleven children.-
