Gertrude was born about 1849 in , Jefferson, Mississippi. Gertrude's father was Sterling Cato and her mother was Rebecca Gillis. Her paternal grandparents were Burwell Cato and Cato; her maternal grandfather was Norman Gillis. She had a brother and three sisters, named Edwin, Georgia Ann, Cora M. and Lacena. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
