Mildred was born about 1730 in , , VA.  Mildred's father was Thomas Cary and her mother was Elizabeth Hinde.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Cary and Anne Milner. She had two brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas and Elizabeth.  She was the second youngest of the four children.
