Robert was born in 1852 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Robert's father was Allen Carpenter and his mother was Sarah Altom. His paternal grandparents were Yelberton Carpenter and Hannah Allen; his maternal grandparents were William Altom and Katherine Price. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named Wilson, John, William, Wiley, James, Gabriel, Jack, George, Andrew, Mary, Jane, Rachel, Rachel and Martha. He was the eighth oldest of the fifteen children.-
