Mary Ann was born on April 27th, 1840 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary Ann's father was Benjamin Ludwell Bussell and her mother was Mary Or Polly Sanders. Her paternal grandparents were William Bussell and Sarah Wyatt. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named George W., James M., John R., Calvin P., Benjamin Sanford, Burwell White, Absalom Tivis, Virinda Jane and Sarah Ann. She was the youngest of the ten children.-
