Mary Jane was born in 1861 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Mary Jane's father was Jesse Brown and her mother was Sarah.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas E. Brown and Sarah Sizemore. She had a sister named Elizabeth.  She was the older of the two children. She had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, John C., Solomon L., Canday, Susan, Sarah C. and Eliza.
