Elbert Poindexter was born about 1865 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Elbert Poindexter's father was Owen Montgomery Brown and his mother was Nancy Louise Faulkner.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas E. Brown and Sarah Sizemore. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Luther Faulkner, Walter Leon, Owen Montgomery, Rebecca Parolee, Sarah Emily and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died about 1866 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.
