His paternal grandparents were William Braose Lord Braose and Bertha Of Hereford; his maternal grandparents were Bernard St. Valerie and Maud. He had nine brothers and six sisters, named Bernard, Giles, Henry, Philip, Reginald, Roger, Thomas, Walter, William, Bertha, Flandrina, Loretta, Margaret, Margery and Maud.
