Elizabeth was born in 1846 in Shawhan, Bourbon, Kentucky. Elizabeth's father was Benjamin Bowen and her mother was Mary Current. Her maternal grandparents were John Current and Elizabeth Amos. She had two brothers and two sisters, named George W., Henry Clay, Harriet and Mary Current. She was the youngest of the five children.-
