Sterling was born in 1838 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Sterling's father was Isaac Bloomer and his mother was Nancy. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Christian, John, William, Jesse, Melvin, Susan, Elizabeth, Catherine, Annis and Louisa.
