Kyle was born in 1841 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Kyle's father was John Blevins and his mother was Minerva Kyle. His maternal grandparents were Absalom Kyle and Barsheba Whitehead Cobb. He had a brother and six sisters, named Robert, Parolee, Sarah, Ann, Alice, Lady and Mary M.. He was the third oldest of the eight children.-
