Martha was born in 1852 in Wythe County, Virginia. Martha's father was John Blessing and her mother was Catherine Baugh. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Blessing and Elizabeth Messersmith. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named George Washington, Noah, John, Blessing, Margaret Jane, Frances Caroline, Sarah Catherine, Elizabeth T., Barbara M., Cynthia and Nancy.-
