Rachel was born on December 1st, 1836 in , Owen, Indiana. Rachel's father was James Beaman and her mother was Lydia Helm. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Beaman and Sarah Langdon; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Helm and Rachel Beaman. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named Calvin, William, George White, Samuel Simpson, Jacob Gibson, Elihu, James Fain, John Tipton, Sarah and Elizabeth. She was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.-
