Katherine was born in 1844 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Katherine's father was Martin Beal and her mother was Nancy. Her paternal grandparents were John Beal and Eve Or Elizabeth Eberhardt. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Martin, Nicholas, Lucinda, Lotta, Mary and Eveline. She was the third youngest of the seven children.-
