John's father was Thomas Ashton and his mother was Elizabeth Byron. His paternal grandparents were John De Ashton and Jane Savile; his maternal grandfather was John Byron. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Edmund, Geoffrey, Dulcia and Elizabeth.
