Mary was born in 1751 in , , NC. Mary's father was Philip Alston and her mother was Winifred Whitmel. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Whitmel and Elizabeth Bryan. She had six brothers and three sisters, named William, Philip, Thomas Whitmel, Henry G., Philip, Samuel, Elizabeth, Winifred and Martha.
