Richard was born about 1838 in Hendricks Co., IN . Richard's father was Phillip Bailey McClain and his mother was Mary " Polly " Edmiston. His paternal grandparents were James W. McCLAIN and Sarah "Sally" BAILEY . He had five brothers and three sisters, named William Jackson, Thomas, James , John Wesley, Jonathon M, Manerva Arthusia, Elizabeth Jane and Nancy . He was the youngest of the nine children.-
