Suffix: Lord
Also known as Sir Alexander Irvine, X
Became the 10th Laird of Drum in 1630. Alexander and Magdalene had at
least 13 children. There were at least 3 unnamed daughters who died in infancy.
HISTORICAL FACTS:
Alexander Irvine, X, was educated at University of Aberdeen. His name
appears on the Ides of 1614. In 1634 he was appointed sheriff of
Aberdeen. As one of the commissioners of Aberdeen, he received an order
in 1638 to cause the people to subscribe to the king's covenant and bond
and he was one of the few commissioners in the North who aided the
Marquis of Huntly in that work. There was an outbreak of hostilities in
1639 between the religious factions. Lord Montrose sent 500 highland men
to the lands of Drum. Siege was laid to Drum Castle when Alexander was
absent and Alexander's wife, Margaret Scrimgeour, surrendered to the
armies and promised to turn over her husband when he returned to Drum.
(Nice gal!) Alexander was sent to prison at Edinburgh Tolbooth and was
also fined 10,000 merks (whatever they were). He obtained his freedom in
1641 and for awhile subscribed to the Covenant, but he later refused the
Covenant. After the Restoration Charles II renewed to Alex's son the
offer of an earldom at Aberdeen of which a patent to his father had been
prevented from receiving the great seal by the outbreak of the
revolution, but Alexander XI declined the honor.
(SOURCES: We have no "paper" documentation which links the Irwins of
Pennsylvania to the Irvines of Scotland, but we do have much "handed
down" material from various families that give proper credence to this
saga. The above facts were furnished from Irwin Family Records released
by H.G. Forbes Ervine at Drum Castle in Aberdeen, Scotland.
H.G. Forbes in a postscript wrote: "The saying -- born at Drum Castle --
does not necessarily mean of the direct line. In many cases wives and
concubines came and had their children at Drum or on the estate in order
to give them a right to come under the protection of the Laird of Drum,
and also to have the prestige of having been "born at Drum."

SCRINGEOUR, d/o Sir John SCRIMGEOUR & Margaret SEATON, on 2 Jul 1617 at
Drum Castle. Alexander was the son of Sir Alexander IRVINE IX & Lady
Marion Margaret DOUGLAS. He was educated at the University of Aberdeen &
appointed sheriff of Aberdeen in 1634. In 1638, as a commissioner of
Aberdeen, he was ordered to cause the people to subscribe to the king's
covenant and bond. As a result of hostilities over the Covenant, he was
imprisoned by Lord Montrose at Edinburgh Tolbooth from 1639-41. For
awhile he subscribed to the Covenant but later refused it. As a result of the hostilities, he was unable to assume the earldom of Aberdeen. He is reputed to have had 13 children. "
