  on land situated in "Welch Settlement" of Craven County...After death of her husband Mrs. Hicks returned to Brunswick County, Va.

  George Hicks, from Virginia, with family of nine whites and elevenBlacks, is willing t o settle and cultivate a part of his Majesty's land, praying that he be granted a tract of land consisting of 400 acres; was surveyed in Welch Tract for James Griffith by virture of a Warrant dated 6 Dec 1745,requiring the same to b e returned to the Secretary's Office,for a Grant within twelve months a plat of which has passed the Surveyer General about a year ago, buthe returned there of made in Secretary's Office.

  ... and that said Griffith having
  some time since left the Province, and as reported and generally believed has come to an untimely end... And whereas Petitioner prays his Excellency and Honorable Members of the Council Chamber to direct the Survey General to Certifie the said Platt in his name so that he may obtain, a Grant thereof formerly certified for said Griffith; and also that the said Surveyer General may be directed to certifie ye Petitioner two Tracts of land in the " Welch Settlement", one for 300 acres. the other for 100 acres surveyed 12th Feb.1745 for James Jones by v irtue of a Warrant, requiring a release unto the said Secretary's Office , was returned wnto the Surveyer General, 9th Mar 1746, where
  they now be, and no ap plication made for same.
