Arthur R Friend, 76, died Sunday, November 11, 2007, at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born in Ivydale, W. Va., in 1931, Art, as he was known by friends and family, served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. He moved to Williamsburg soon after his discharge, attended the College of William & Mary, and graduated early in 1958.
He was hired by NASA as the Head of the Industry Relations Department and through a special work program, moved to Bloomington, Ind., and attended Indiana University, obtaining his Masters of Business Administration in 1967.
Moving back to Williamsburg, he continued his job at NASA in Hampton, Va., where he worked for a total of 33 years, retiring in 1987.
Art was involved in several civic organizations throughout his life including the Jaycees, Toastmasters and the SAR.
For years he was actively involved in fundraising for the United Way. He was a member of the Williamsburg Assembly of God Church. He loved William and Mary football and basketball, NCAA basketball, Barney Fife, John Wayne and Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. He was a avid runner before the onset of his illness and completed the W&M half marathon three times.
Art had a gift for helping those in need, no matter who they were and in any way he was able. He was a soft spoken, gentle man who will be missed by many.
