"I thought some of you might be interested in this. I visited the Rowan County (NC) courthouse today, and found the will of Nathan Dicks, Jr., in Will Book A, page 29: They did not show me the original, and the photocopy that is available shows that the original is a little tattered and torn or unclear in places. I may be able to clarify some of the missing words on another visit and with further study, but I will post what I have in the meantime:
"Whereas I, Nathan Dicks, of the County of Rowan and Province of North Carolina, ___ knowing and considering the great uncertainty of Life here do think it needfull to leave behind me the following ________ [Lines?] as my last Will & Testament, that is to say principally and first of all, I recommend __________ [my Soul?] unto the Lord who gave it me, and my Body I recommend unto the Earth to be buried in a Christian-like ______ manner at the Discretion of my Friends & Relations. And as touching such worldly substance wherewith the Almighty hath been pleased to favor me, ______ [withall?] I bequeath, dispose and distribute thereof in Manner & Form as follows, towit I devise in the first place that all my just Debts be pay'd --- I give unto Zachariah Dicks, my younger brother, that part of my land joining _______ James Brittain, laid off for him by William Millikan, with a line begining near that Branch called the Little Branch and runs down it to the mouth & crosses the Creek & so into the Line of the whole Tract --- The remaining part of my Land I have unto my two sons Joshua and William equally to be divided between them, that is to say Joshua is to have the lower part down the Creek, & William the Improvement I now live on, all the remaining part of my Estate I give unto my Wife for her support and bringing up my Children and to be at her disposal during the time she remains my Widdow, and if she marries before my Daughters is [are] of age, I _______ before that two parts of the said remaining part should be equally divided between Hannah, Deborah & Grace, my three daughters. And lastly I ordain, constitute, and appoint my loving wife, Mary Dick and trusty Friend William Baldwin the whole and sole Executors of this my last Will & Testament, ordering & desiring they may execute & perform this my last Will & Testament to the best of their Understanding, according to the Intent and Meaning thereof. And I do utterly revoke all other or former Wills, Testaments, or Legacies that may appear in my Name, ratifying and confirming this & no other. In Witness whereof I hereunto set my Hand & Seal this 27th Day of the 10th Mo. 1765. [Signed] Nathan Dicks.
[To the left of Nathan Dicks' signature:] Nathan Dick's [sic] last Will and Testament signed and sealed in the presence of John Hiatt, Thomas Jessop, John Unthank."
The note in the margin is a little hard to read, but it is clear that the will was probated in 1766, and the notation looks like "July Court."
