James was born in 1804 in Nelson Co., KY. James 's father was John BLAND and his mother was ELizabeth SHUMATE. His paternal grandparents were Samuel * BLAND and Mary Ann UNKNOWN. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Bryant , Catherine, Eleanor , Mary (Polly), Lucinda, Mildred, Frances (Fanny) and Martha . He was the second oldest of the nine children.-
