Joseph was born around 1793 in Bath County, the son of Zachariah and Sarah (McCartney) Barnett.
Sarah McCartney, with her brothers, Andrew, Thomas, Joseph, and her sisters, Margaret,Elizabeth and Jenny came direct from Scotland to settle in Virginia. The McCartney family first settled in Pendleton County, but Thomas and Andrew came around 1812 to what is now Lewis and Braxton Counties but was then Harrison County.
