Jonathan was born about 1834 in Nicholas Co., WV.  Jonathan's father was John A.  BACKHOUSE and his mother was Phobe "Pheby"       JOHNSON.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph BACKHOUSE and Hannah D.  WILSON . He had four brothers and four sisters, named John , Joseph , James, Willliam , Polly , Elizabeth , Nancy  and Hannah.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
