Ray's father was Richard Alexander Pilcher and his mother was Ella Mae Reed. His paternal grandparents were Daniel C. III Pilcher and Lucinda Jane DeMasters. He had two brothers and a sister, named Douglas, Paul and Lula. He had a half-sister named Winnie.-
