Hugh le Despenser II Justiciar was born in 1223 in Rhyall, Rutland, Wales.1 Hugh le Despenser II Justiciar's father was Sir Hugh le Despenser. His paternal grandparents were Thomas le Despenser and Rohese (le Despenser). He was an only child. He died at the age of 42 on August 4th, 1265 in Battle of Evesham, Worcestershire, England. Per Cokayne's "Complete Peerage (Despenser, pp. 259-261): This Hugh was
at the parl. of Oxford, 1258, he was one of the 12 elected by the barons
to
redress grievances and treat with the council of KING HENRY II I. Appointed
Justiciar of England 1260. Attended Montfort's parl. of 1063. W as at the
battle of Lewes 1264. In 1265 he was appointed an arbiter between t he
Earls of Leicester [Simon de Montfort (RIN 2884*)] and Gloucester
[GILBE RT DE CLARE (RIN 726)]. He was prominent in the rebellion against
KING HENRY III and died alongside Simon de Montfort at the Battle of
Eversham in 1265.
