Greefileld was born in 1806.1   Greefileld's father was Samuel Buchanan and his mother was Rachel Greenfield.  His paternal grandparents were John Buchanan and Jane Patterson. He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Coleman Cox, Thomas Wesley, John W, Cyrus A, Elizabeth Jane, Mary Ann, Martha Jane, Nancy, Jincy Adeline and Melissa P.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.
