William Marion was born about 1837 in Selma, Alabama.1   William Marion's father was Woodard Bardin and his mother was Martha Polly Gandy.  His paternal grandparents were John Bardin and Nancy Wasdin. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John C, Joseph Key, Jesse Woodard, Sariah, Susan, Nancy Caroline, Martha Ann Missouri and Mary Senie.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
