Narrative

Dr. Robert Hugh Ervin received the degree of M.D., from Transylvania
University in 1845. He was a member of the Alabama legislature, 1845 -
1853, and of the State Senate in 1863. In 1858 - 1859, he was Grand
Master of the Alabama Grand Lodge of Masons.
In 1861, he enlisted in a mounted company of Alabama volunteers, and
participated in the battle of Shiloh. After the close of the war he
abandoned his planting interests and engaged in the commission business
in Mobile, where he died in 1875.
Dr. Ervin is thus described: "a planter, stout and robust, with a brisk
but kind deportment - a type of the Southern gentleman - of noble
qualities of mind and heart, he sustained a high rank in public and
social life." See Garret's Public Men of Alabama, p. 731, and Brewer's
Alabama, p. 500. p. 256 Va Cousins.
