Narrative

James West Pegram was the adopted son of Seth Ward and the fourth natural
son of his mother's niece whose husband General John Pegram died leaving
twelve children. The niece died soon thereafter and James West Pegram was
brought up as a son of Seth Ward. Seth Ward himself was early left
without a father and placed under the guardianship of his uncle, Colonel
Robert Goode of Whitby, No. 90 in Virginia Cousins, p. 109.
James West Pegram was General of Virginia Troops when killed by a steam
boat explosion in 1844.
