Alabama Conference Female College, Tuskeegee, AL, 1909; Woman's College,
Montgomery, AL, 1913, art and chemistry. During World War II, she was
hired by Houston County High School to replace the coach who was
drafted. She taught math and science as well as coached the football
team (about which she knew nothing). She continued to teach English for
several years. On July 12, 1946, she was struck by lightning, which
entered her right shoulder and exited her left foot, damaging most of the
organs in between. She survived, underwent extensive surgery, and by
work and willpower, regained full function. On her ninetieth birthday she
was up before sunrise, plowing with a hand plow, to plant her Zinnia
seedlings.
