Colonel Edward Tate was one of the early settlers of Lynchburg, had a
long and vexatious lawsuit with the lynch family, and which he lost,
concerning the ownership of the land upon which the city is built. He was
very active in the movements which preceded the Declaration of
Independence by the colonies.
He fought in many battles of the Revolution, especially at the Cowpens
and Guilford Court House, and for gallant conduct he received the
compliments of the commanding officers and subsequently, the thanks of
Gen. Washington.
He had two brothers, Caleb and John, early settlers of Lynchburg; other
members of his family were early settlers of Tennessee.
