Gilbert was born about 1283. Gilbert's father was Thomas, Lord de Clare and his mother was Julianne Fitz-Maurice Fitz-Gerald. His paternal grandparents were Earl Richard de Clare and Maud de Lacy; his maternal grandparents were Maurice Fitz-Gerald, Lord Justice Fitz-Maurice and Emmeline de Longsepee. He had a brother and two sisters, named Richard, Margery and Matilda Maud. He had a half-sister named Margery.-
