Benjamin's father was Captain Robert Reade Tompkins and his mother was Ann Dickinson. His paternal grandparents were Christopher Tompkins and Joyce Reade; his maternal grandparents were Griffith Dickenson and Ann Cosby. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Bennet Dickerson, Charles Dickerson, William Dickerson, Christopher, Bailey Dickerson, Samuel, Martha, Catherine, Betsey, Richard, Ann and Lucy Ann Dickerson.-
