Champe B. was born in 1843 in CAROLINE VA.1 Champe B.'s father was Champe Brockenbrough Thornton and his mother was Elizabeth Grammer. His paternal grandparents were Philip Wade Thornton(Chatterton) and Lucy Austin Brockenbrough. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Charles Presley, Christopher G., Julius Fitzhugh, John Tayloe, Arthur Presley, Charles Wade, Grammer, Mary Rosena and Matilda Grammer "Tillie".
