Ruby was born in Cameron, Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Ruby's father was William Glen Stewart and her mother was Naomii Roy. Her paternal grandparents were William Everette Stewart and Dora Harper; her maternal grandparents were Martin Roy and Sylvania Miller. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Alfred Lawrence, James Ralph (Uncle Jim), William Glenn (Uncle Bud), Frankie (Aunt Sis), Flora, Tracy Agnes and Shirley Lee.
