Howell Ridley's father was Colonel Nathaniel Robards and his mother was Mary Ridley. His paternal grandparents were James Robards and Mary Massie; his maternal grandparents were William Ridley and Elizabeth Lewis. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Brig. Gen. William H., C.S.A., Charles Lewis, Colonel Willis Lewis, C.S.A., Francis Hawkes, James Ridley, John Ridley, Caroline Virginia, Eliza, Julia Constance and Mary Ann.-
